New Environmental Regulation on The Way

De-forestation, shallow waterways, natural streams blocked by structures, encroachment on wetlands and drains clogged by sediment and debris during the rainy season have all been blamed by the Deputy Governor of Surat Thani for Samui's recent flooding problems.
As a long term solution, stricter environmental regulations are to be introduced and enforced to eradicate future flooding. The new regulations will state that all applications for building permits will have to include approved water-drainage systems. The construction process will be monitored to ensure that it matches the plans submitted for the permit.
The Provinces budget for the next four years will also fund other long term projects. These will include the construction of nearly 5000 small dams around the island. Deep rooted vetiver grass which prevents erosion will be included in areas more prone to landslides. The islands wetlands are being surveyed in an attempt to assist officials find preventive measures to future encroachment.
